Not able to open files after windows 10 upgrade

Hello,  I just bought a new computer with windows 10 on it. I had tried to get into my insurance information (files) and all I get is a bunch of letters and numbers all jumbled together. So I downloaded adobe reader thinking that's what I needed. Well that didn't work. It has to do with my computer because the tech at the insurance sight had no problems on there end with my computer. Can someone help. I use this information a lot and need to see it. Thank you

Hi @buffy2011 Here's a good read for you.  Please update us if you're still having problems and other members will try to help you.

When you have no clue what kind of file you’re dealing with or what software will run it and if Windows doesn’t know how to open it, try opening it with the native Windows tools Notepad or WordPad.

What kind of files are they? What are the file extensions? .docx? .pdf? 

I can't imagine an upgrade of the OS would impact other files on the drive. Something else might be going on. Perhaps you lost the association of those file types with the correct app needed to open them.

Heya @Steve K. good question. They could be pdf files. In that case the poster would need Adobe or Foxit Reader.

I prefer Foxit because Adobe has become a magnet for malware.If you use Adobe, you need to keep it updated.

Also how were you trying to read them? In a browser vs saved to the desktop. If you were trying to read them in a browser then the browser also has to have Adobe Reader installed in to it.

Heya @Rich-M great suggestion about the browser. The poster might try a different browser and see what happens. My chose would be Firefox!

Poster is getting some good suggestions. Team work is a good thing IMHO.

Yes or save it to desktop then use computer to open it instead of browser.
