  1. I sure hope they finally fix this version. The other day I took my last desktop back to Windows 7 as I could not take the issues any more with Windows 10. I have been hoping that the paid version available after this "FREE" period ends will solve all the issues I have seen. Power lights staying on after shutdown requiring holding the power button off 4 seconds before trying to start system, internet dropping in about 45 minutes requiring restart, video freezes, and various other issues I just could not fix. I tried changing motherboard, bios flashes and finally clean install and finally gave up and installed Windows 7 and this unit is now fine and super fast the way it was when I first built it in January.

    Amazon Sale

You know its funny, I am a Prime member and buy a lot at Amazon, but one place I feel they fall down is in sale enticements. In fact I usually just delete them without even bothering to read much like poor eBay ads as well.
  3. I shut down my laptop when I am done with it as I see no reason to leave it on, then again I don't use it much. Laptops suffer from heat issues caused by tight cramped quarters so I always advise my clients to shut them down when done or for certain at least at night if that is all they use. Desktops the same way shutdown when I leave the house or at night before I go to bed. Nothing worse than a punch drunk computer whose memory hasn't reset in a week trying to solve an issue on memory from a week ago. Many years ago I seldom had a hard drive last more than 2 years. Since I started my current policy I have drives running that are 8-10 years old and have never lost one. This is from a printout I leave with all my clients: Here are some points I would like to make on this topic. 1. Even in sleep mode power must be applied to the system in order for memory to remain active. Even though data is written from memory to the HDD before going into sleep mode, power must still be applied to memory when asleep. Actually low voltage power is continuously applied to the motherboard even during sleep; only peripheral devices are shut down or put into a low power state. This means the power supply must also remain alive. 2. Current (no matter how low a voltage) does wear down wires, but even more so microcircuits. 3. Heat is generated so long as current is being supplied and heat dries out protective coatings and sheathing. Both heat and current will weaken solder points over time. 4. Electricity creates electrostatic environment, especially when the environment is already very dry such as winter months. This attracts dust which as we all know restricts airflow causing over heating both inside the case and around heatsinks, builds up in fans and causes them to fail. 5. Surge protectors are virtually useless (IMHO), but better than nothing at all. They will NOT stop a lightning strike, nor will they prevent a black or brown out. 6. Storms are unpredictable as are auto accidents, high winds, etc. All of which can cause a power failure or rolling black or brown outs. All of which can cause an immediate loss of power to a system. Leaving a system on 24/7 increases the likelihood of a system being effected by them. 7. A sleeping system still uses more power than a powered down system. 8. Monitors in a low power state and printers are just as susceptible to all these conditions. Conclusion: Unless there is some very specific need for a system to remain on such as remote monitoring, or data syncing, shut them off.
  4. That is one of the reasons I hate to use 3rd party aps for photos/ Look at all the lost pups out there when Kodak ended it's program Easy Share, and years ago I was dependent on a great program called Compupic that just hit the dust about 10 years ago and you can "bet your bippy" that the next version of Windows will not be compatible with old versions of those either. And I have so many clients who can't do anything with photos without one or the other...its sad. Today I use Irfanview for a graphics viewer and Gimp for more advanced projects and neither one of those is going anywhere!
  5. Interesting Upgrade coming right after free version date ends...I wonder if there is a coincidence there.
  6. Most of the problems I am aware of Gary are incompatible hardware and HP always heads the list in those. They are also always the last ones to provide new drivers for new Windows version also.
  7. How on earth did you double your speed for less $? I have Comcast and I have 60 MBPS with 12.97 upload but its an extra $30 to go to 90 Mbps for me. I have never seen upload that fast unless it was a mistake....
  8. I would suggest using standard user and Admin as I doubt you can make the changes you want as simply as it seems. Many users do that themselves and use the standard user for their own protection on the internet.
  9. Gary I was forced to use Windows 8.1 on my Sony Laptop as it ran like a turtle in Windows 10 with the Upgrade and same for clean install. That laptop is a Gen4 Intel cpu with 16 Gb ram and an ssd drive so there is no reason it should have been slower than a netbook but I could not solve it so I went back. Has to be some incompatible hardware thart just would not show up.
  10. I realize this is an old post but sometimes when you are looking for solutions to similar problems, the cause can be Malware so if you look in this forum here: there are a lot og food programs mentioned to help you see if you are infected:
  11. Bravo holdem333 excellent job here. I might add if you are really stumped by a BSOD and Gary's suggested programs don't give you an answer, not that I want you to go elsewhere but most larger forums have BSOD readers who are thoroughly well read in BSOD language and indications.
  12. If you have the newest version of QuickTime that should be in it and if you don't here is a prime reason why you need to update programs when updated verisons are available. Software makers want you to use the newest versions of their software.
  13. Gary's suggestions are right on track for the most part what I recommend, but I do not reccomend giving Superantispyware "its head" as while it once was an awesome program, to day it seems to mostly pull tracking cookies and occasionally has hosed a system I was working on by being a bit too careless. I would rather add "Rogue Killer" to the mix for safety sake: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/roguekiller/ I also suggest "tdss killer" that includes a few more common rootkit issues http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/tdsskiller/ and I also like to suggest "autoruns" as well where you can remove many uninstalled remains from incomplete installations, to keep startup really clean http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/autoruns/ One more addtion would be "Win Patrol" which keeps startup and registry clean as well as prevent browser hijacking: www.winpatrol.com Oh and so you know some of what I recommended have paid versions but also all have free versions that are fully functional as well.
  14. For most average users Mbam Pro and WD is all you need. You know where you surf and the chances you take better than anyone and there are better paid soultions out there such as Emsisoft and Webroot, but what you do and your experirnce is all you need to determine your needs.
