Reason for Microsoft Moving from Windows 8 to 10

The weird thing about this week's Windows 10 announcement is more attention is being paid to why the company went from Windows 8 to 10 and not Windows 9. I am more than sick of the annoying lame jokes about it this week too.

Anyway, PC World has an interesting article about why Windows 9 wasn't a choice because of 95 and 98:

To save time, some third-party Windows desktop developers used a shorthand to check the version name (not number) of Windows they were installing their app to. Instead of coding apps to check for Windows 95 or Windows 98, developers coded instructions to check for "Windows 9."

I really don't care what the call it. It's new, OK cool. I'm sure MS has their reasons for why they are skipping 9. Knowing all the issues they've been having with names recently, my guess is it has something to do with a legal issue....

Could be Shocker...who knows, and frankly you're right! Who cares what they call it. Way too much attention was paid to the name.
