Windows 10 (Technical Preview) has a feature that allows you to create shortcuts for Modern apps on the desktop.

In Windows 8.1 update 1 you could pin Modern apps to the Taskbar, but not add them to the desktop.

Just open the Start menu, click and drag the app you want to make a shortcut for to the desktop. It's easy -- just like making shortcuts in previous versions of Windows. Hopefully this feature will make the cut when it comes to the final version.
