Windows Defender Fails

I am running the recent upgrade to Windows 10, 1803. Windows Defender only works for Quick Scan. The application fails and closes if "Advanced Scans" is selected. I have been sent on several dead ends and blind alleys. When I try to repair the Windows Update, a WARNING screen informed that Windows Defender SmartScreen is NOT available. I underwent a remote session, and Windows Defender suddenly worked. But after exiting the sessions, I am back to square one. What can I do ??

No. Windows Defender is the only Antivirus on my system.

Window Security Health works OK when Quick Scan is selected. But Windows Defender crashes when Advanced Scans are selected.  I am running Windows 10, version 1803. This problem has persisted for seven days. The current build is 17134.112...

I have had two remote sessions which solve the problem temporarily, but a few hours later, Windows Security Health crashes when Advanced Scan is selected.

Before submitting this, I have run SFC and DISM.  DISM made repairs, then I rebooted.  The problem with Security Health Center still happens. This is a MAJOR ERROR, Microsoft.  This is fundamental to the safe functioning of WINDOWS OS.
