Windows 10 Feature: Share from File Explorer

Recommended Posts

File Explorer has received some new features in Windows 10. Namely the Share feature that allows you to share files directly from the file system using the Share feature that debuted in Windows 8 in the Modern UI. Remember seeing it on the Charms bar? We covered how to use the Share charm in Windows 8, and the concept is great, however, using it in Windows 8.x is the clunkiest experience ever.

Enter the Share button in Windows 10 in the Technical Preview...and I hope this feature makes it in the final version of Windows 10 maybe tweaking it a bit. Here's a look at how it works.

Open File Explorer (called Windows Explorer in Windows 7 and lower) and navigate to a file or folder or a combination of both that you want to share. Then open the Share tab from the ribbon where you will see the Share button on the left -- click it and that will bring up a sidebar that displays displays the apps you can share your files and/or folders to.

There will be different apps depending on the file types you select. For example, here I selected photos, and a lot more items appeared like Facebook, Twitter and Mail.

There needs to be more consistency as far as the apps that appear and the file types you pick. I mean, why do I have Fresh Paint coming up when I am selecting Word documents? But as we all know, this is a work in progress so time will tell.

What is your take on the sharing option so far?
