Unwanted Sound Icon

I have suddenly stated getting this icon flashing on my screen. It stays in the foreground and moves up and down the left hand side of the screen

Sound still operates normally and changing from low to high or high to low volume has no effect.

Can anyone tell me what it is, where it came from and hown to get rid of it.
