AUTO brightness truly AUTO not user chosen

Auto Brightness is not responding to manual/user specific options. It keeps shifting to a dim setting although I've chosen FULL performance. i'm using an older Sony Vaio and have worked on every imaginable configuration, however, the machine WANTS to limit the brightness supposedly for battery performance. NOT necessary when plugged in. I've reviewed all forums and it does not respond. PLEASE fix with an update. THE USER should be able to override or configure the settings.:) thanks.
