Arbitrary rollback to Windows 8.1

I installed the Win10 upgrade about a month ago on both my laptops - I use both intermittently for work.

This morning, when I booted, I got a blue screen that said "diagnosing your PC" - then it went to "reinstalling your earlier version of Windows". Suddenly, I had Win8.1 back. I like Win8.1, but I was getting accustomed to Win10 (or trying to). I've found all kinds of ways to rollback to a former Win OS, but nothing to get me back to Win10 where I prefer to stay.
