I can't get the Power/Battery Power Icon back on Notification area

I no longer have the power icon, which told me how much time I had left on battery. I've tried Settings - Notifications but the power icon on/off toggle switch is greyed out. Is it something I've done? More importantly, can some kind soul please tell me how to get it back. Thanks.
