The Windows 10 Anniversary Update is fast approaching. To ensure users experience a smooth upgrade, here are some things you can do.

  • Disable your Antivirus utility temporarily before attempting the upgrade. Click the respective link for the Antivirus utility you are running. Please remember to re-enable your Antivirus after successfully upgrade.

- Norton - right click Norton in the Notification Area then click Disable Antivirus
- McAfee
- ESET NOD32
- Kaspersky
- Avast
- AVG
- Trend Micro
- Bitdefender
- Webroot Secure Anywhere
- F-Secure
- Panda
- Comodo

  • Make sure your machine name is simple no periods or hyphens or dashes. Avoid using names such as "System" or Account or Administrator for your Machine.

  • Restart a few times then try again.

Click Start > Power Options > Restart

  • Disable General USB Devices (example - Smart Card Reader).

Press Windows key + X > click Device Manager > expand Memory technology devices. Right click SD Controllers, then click uninstall. If there is more than one, right click each, then click Uninstall.

  • If you are using a SCSI hard disk, make sure you have drivers available for your storage device on a thumb drive and it is connected. During Windows 10 setup, click the Custom Advanced Option and use the Load Driver command to load the appropriate driver for the SCSI drive. If this does not work and setup still fails, consider switching to a IDE based hard disk.

  • If you are upgrading using the .ISO file, disconnect from the Internet during setup, if you are connected by LAN (Ethernet) or Wi-Fi, disable both then attempt setup again.

There are multiple ways to do this, you can disconnect the Ethernet cable if you are connected to a wireless network. If you are connected to a wireless network, you can manually disable Wi-Fi by turning off the Wireless switch on your laptop.

Another way that is even easier, is to open Action Center - press Windows key + A then click Airplane Mode. This will disable all network technologies. Proceed with the upgrade.

  • If you are updating through Windows Update, when the download reaches 100% disconnect from the Internet LAN (Ethernet) or Wi-Fi then proceed with the installation.

See previous steps.

  • If that does not work, try using the .ISO file to upgrade if possible.

  • If you are connected to a domain, switch to a local account.

  • If you have any external devices attached to the machine, disconnect them (example, gaming controllers, USB keys, external hard disk, printers, non-essential devices).

I thought the anniversary upgrade was automatic and would be done through windows updates?? I have to do all that to get the anniversary up grade??

It should be, but in case you encounter problems with the upgrade, these are some things you can do to ensure a smooth upgrade. Remember, after July 29th, 1.3 billion users will still be running a mix of Windows 7 or Windows 8.

Hi @adacosta I have another question for you. I have a flash with the MCT on it. It works very well and I have used it on several seniors PCs to upgrade their PCs to W10. I also have a flash with the Recovery Drive on it.

My question  to you "Should I make a new MCT flash after the anniversary update, or is my old flash still good.

Thank you!

PS I use PNY flash drives for this! Sandisk seem to have a problem being recognized for creating the MCT and the recovery drive!

With that in mind there are a few things you ll want to do after upgrading to Windows 10 beyond simply familiarizing yourself with the new layouts and locations.

Hi, thanks for your resourceful post! I tried 2 days ago to install the anniversary update through Windows Update and it went terribly wrong.  See, my case is a bit complicated B|: My laptop (MSI GP60) is configured as a dual-boot system running Windows 10 and Fedora 24. I simply choose each time the OS I want to boot through the GRUB menu. After the windows update installation completed, I ended up with an endless boot loop. Fortunately the Fedora OS and GRUB menu where left intact. After a lot of research I managed to create a windows 10 bootable USB-stick under Fedora and rolled back to the previous build version 1511. Now I am currently trying to troubleshoot what went wrong, it seems that I have some corrupt system files. I tried to resolve the issues with executing following commands on powershell with admin rights  sfc /scannow and DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth but to to no avail.  I haven't tried out your guide yet because I'm just too scared of having the same problems again. Would you happen to have any extra suggestions / precautions for me?

Hi There! I'll let @adacosta help you with the anniversary update. One precaution I always suggest when doing any major changes to your PC is to create a back up image of your OS. Then you have a easy way to get back where you started.

Why do you think you have some corrupt system files?? You say you tried sfc /scannow and DISM commands. What were the results? Are you still showing violations when you run sfc /scannow? You may get more replies from other forum members latter!;)

Hi, holdum333! Well the commands couldn't complete successfully , the error was that the source was not found. I worked around it by using a mounted system image of my build version. Thank you for your quick response, I managed to correct the faulty files after all. Still scared to proceed with the upgrade though. A backup image was exactly my thought too, the problem is, I don't have my external HDD around, guess I should ask a couple of friends to borrow one.

Hi Alex! I had that error "the source was not found" one time, but I don't remember how I got around it. Using a system image was a good idea. Glad to hear you got your file system sorted out. That can cause a lot of problems. I just got a new seagate 1TB external drive from staples. It was on sale for 59$.

I haven't tried upgrading to the anniversary addition yet. Waiting for everyone to get the bugs out xD. I'll have a current image handy when I do upgrade.

I've heard that there's not that much in the anniversary update. I'm in no hurry for it. My W10 is working well. I spend a lot of time on the groovy's sister forum. Haven't heard any thing there about the anniversary update. Would love to see you on the help forum. Thanks for your reply!

Some users are reporting remote access software such as LogMeIn can block the upgrade when using the Upgrade Assistant. Make sure you uninstall it before attempt the upgrade.

Great point. Reminds me, when I upgraded to stopped everything running possible via

WINKEY+R > Type Services.msc > Stop any 3rd party apps you don't need running. > Perform Upgrade

Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant direct download did not work for me... got an error code after the download.  What did work for me was downloading the Media Creation Tool (MCT) to a flash drive. The MCT contains the latest Win 10 Version 1607 build 14393.10 Anniversary update.  Took about 30 minutes to download.  Then went to File Explorer, clicked on My PC showing all drives.  Clicked on the USB drive opening the MCT .  Clicked on the file "Setup.exe" and the update began installing.  This took about one hour.  Very pleased with the results...no problems.  After all this, I cloned my HDD to my second internal HDD with Macrium Reflect (Free Version), then disconnected it for safety.  If anything happens to drive #1, I simply clone #2 back to #1.  This works for me but requires getting inside the tower to connect/disconnect it.  Good luck in your endeavors.

BEWARE!!!!  WARNING!!!!!  If you have an older PC/laptop which boots to Windows 10 with an unsigned driver (such as a Dell Latitude D630) do NOT (Really, seriously!!!) attempt the anniversary update.

This update (release 1607) does NOT allow the option of an unsigned driver, and (as happened to me) you get to the boot stage, the installation will stop, complain about an unsigned driver, and NOT allow a rollback to a previous edition of windows.

Still repairing as of this post, no solution found.

Hi Sorry to hear you had a problem with the update. That is why I always advise PC users to create a back up image of your OS and save all your data to a external drive before making any drastic changes.

Please post back with your progress! May I ask how you attempted the update. Was it with the windows update or with the MCT? Did you go here as @adacosta suggested in his blog!

My system updated in Tuesday and now I have no network information  and cannot connect to the internet. When I click on the windows startup icon it doesn't bring any thing up and my notifications icon won't open when clicked either. How do I fix all of these issues. I at this time have a laptop I can no longer use.

Hi ! You are saying your PC updated Tuesday. I'm a summing you're talking about the anniversary update. There are three ways to upgrade and I have posted them above, but here it is again.  What have you done to try to fix your problem? I would suggest trying the media creation tool to upgrade. Was W10 working before the update? Have you tried reset or refresh? Your post leaves a lot to be desired. It would be helpful also to know your make and model. You may get more replies from other forum members latter. Please post back what you have tried to do to recover from your issues. What do you see when windows boots up? Are you able to boot into Windows?? Can you get to the recovery mode? Do you have a system repair DVD? W10 has several ways to recover your operating system!

I have done about 7 Anniversary Updates now without an issue but on my eigth it restarted and hung and the next thing I know what had been installed was removed and I was back to earlier version. Now I had walked away so the next attempt I made was fine because I never left the pc. Unfortunately I do not know what caused the earlier failure.

I am puzzled though that recently I had a failed clean install after updates were installed the very first time. I believe I had a series of hardware errors as I got caught in a reboot cycle of errors caused install to fail and that failure was there for 3 different motherboards, hard drives, memory and media. The only way I moved on was to switch to AMD Apu and motherboard....will advise if I ever figure that one out.

Heya @Rich-M I'm curious to know if you did any of the suggestions by @adacosta in this blog, to ensure a smooth upgrade. I haven't upgraded to the anniversary yet. I'm going to wait awhile for MS to get some bugs out. I have the anniversary update on a PNY flash and that's what I'll use to upgrade!

Actually no Holdum333 because I hadn't read the thread yet. I went in under Pc Settings,Updates, and "learn more" which took me to a page explaining the Anniversary Update and on it is a link to the actual Download and it started and ran very smoothly. In the clean install nightmare I was referring to I did eventually disable Antivirus, check bios and reset bios and all the right things to do which made no difference at all.
