Yes, You Can Still Download Windows Essentials including Windows Live Movie Maker

In December, Microsoft annouced it was ending support for its suite of lifestyle apps, Windows Essentials. The last version launched in 2012 with the release of Windows 8. Since then, the software has been in maintenance mode. Even though the software firm promised to remove the software by January 10, 2017, its still available for download. I just checked and the following link still works: http://web.archive.org/web/20170109223306/http:/g.live.com/1rewlive5-all/en/wlsetup-all.exe

Its not known how long this will last, but as I noted in the original article, get it while you can. Users should note, Movie Maker, which a lot of users strongly prefer using, must be installed with Photo Gallery. Its not a big deal, you don't have to use Photo Gallery, but they are integrated in the installer. Other apps like Live Writer and Live Mail can be unchecked from the installer.

The apps still work on Windows 10 just fine.

Has anyone found a better link? I just had to factory reset my laptop and desperately want my old copy of WMM back, but don't want to risk corrupt downloads or versions with errors :/

Guest How to fix the error by install

Posted

If you get an error, by trying to install Movie Maker and Photo Viewer, youll need to have .NET Framework 2 and 3 installed first..

I found out when i tried to install it in my language (Danish), but it wont install!

Then i tried again with the normal (english?) file, and it started to ask me, to install .NET 2 and 3 first.

After i did that, i closed it, and installed Movie Maker with the installer in my language with success!

I used this to install the both the .NET frameworks: http://web.archive.org/web/20170109223306/http:/g.live.com/1rewlive5-all/en/wlsetup-all.exe

I used this site to find the installer in my language: http://winaero.com/blog/get-windows-essentials-offline-installers-before-microsoft-removes-them/

I've clicked every link on this page and nothing works! The one with the list of different languages, when I click on English (US) it takes me to a page that's NOT english!

After a recent replacement of my hard drive I have been trying to make my computer familiar again and didn't realize MM wasn't saved. I was pretty worried that I wouldn't be able to download it successfully after reading so many comments about troubles but it went off without a hitch. The necessary .NET 3.5 file popped up with a link to it when I choose my OS and once downloaded the link to MM was right there.
THANK YOU!!

I was able to download the 130 MB setup file.  I ran it and selected custom install, only wanting to install Movie Maker.

"Next" brought me to a screen that said that Movie Maker and Photo Gallery would be Upgraded?  OneDrive, etc. could be unchecked, but Movie Maker and Photo Gallery would be upgraded.

Huh?  Neither were installed!

I clicked through the installer and 2 minutes later, clicked Close.

Sadly, no Movie Maker.  While there are a few files in ProgramFiles\Live, including a Photo Gallery folder, there is no actual Movie Maker application (nor Photo Gallery app).

Help!
